Yin yoga has the same objectives as other yoga styles, however, the stimulation is on the deeper connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and joints that are not stimulated in other active yoga (or yang) classes. Active yoga classes such as any Hatha yoga is considered a yang practice.

Yin yoga is suitable for almost all levels of students and complements all yang or active styles of yoga. Yin yoga often focuses on the hips, pelvis and lower spine. Yin yoga can be quite challenging as you often hold poses anywhere from 1-5 minutes at a time, and during this time you are expected to feel “healthy intensity.”

Often a bolster, foam block, cork block, and strap may be used. At home, you can use a folded towel, pillow or books as well. A mat is not necessarily needed.
