Supporting Every Voice. Empowering Every Individual.
AAC includes a variety of communication methods that supplement or replace speech, allowing individuals to communicate more independently and confidently at home, school, work, and in the community.
Our Speech-Language Pathologists work collaboratively with individuals, families, caregivers, educators, and other professionals to identify the most appropriate communication supports and ensure they are successfully integrated into everyday life.
What is AAC?
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to communication systems used by individuals whose speech does not fully meet their communication needs. AAC may include:
- Communication boards and books
- Picture-based communication systems
- Speech-generating devices
- Tablet-based communication applications
- Symbol-based communication systems
- Eye-gaze or alternative access systems
- Gestures, signs, and other non-verbal communication methods
AAC is not intended to replace communication—it expands opportunities for individuals to express themselves, connect with others, and participate more fully in daily life.
Who Can Benefit from AAC Therapy?
AAC may be beneficial for individuals with:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Cerebral palsy
- Developmental delays
- Childhood apraxia of speech
- Genetic or neurological conditions
- Traumatic brain injury
- Progressive neurological disorders
- Complex communication needs
- Limited or unreliable verbal speech
Every individual is unique, and AAC systems are selected based on communication strengths, abilities, goals, and everyday environments.

Our Speech-Language Pathologists provide individualized AAC support that may include:

Our goal is to help individuals become confident and successful communicators using the tools that work best for them.
A Collaborative Approach
Successful AAC implementation involves more than choosing a device—it requires teamwork. We collaborate closely with parents, caregivers, teachers, support workers, physicians, and other professionals to ensure communication strategies are consistent across all environments.
When appropriate, our multidisciplinary team can also coordinate services with psychologists, counsellors, educators, and other specialists to provide comprehensive, person-centred care.
Empowering Communication and Independence
Communication is a fundamental human right. AAC can open doors to stronger relationships, increased independence, greater participation in learning, and improved quality of life.
Our neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based approach focuses on helping each individual communicate in ways that are meaningful to them while respecting their unique abilities and communication preferences.
