Animal Assisted Therapy

At Joshua Tree Learning Centre, we believe healing can take many forms — and sometimes, it involves our furry and equine friends. Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a unique, evidence-informed therapeutic approach that uses interactions with animals to support emotional, social, and mental well-being.

Whether in a one-on-one session or a group setting, animals provide a nonjudgmental presence that can help clients feel safe, understood, and motivated to engage in therapy.

What Is Animal-Assisted Therapy?

Animal-Assisted Therapy is a collaborative approach where a trained therapist integrates the presence of specially selected animals into therapeutic work. Interacting with animals can reduce stress, build trust, encourage emotional expression, and enhance social skills. Animals are not just companions — they are partners in the healing process, offering comfort, connection, and gentle guidance as clients explore their goals.

Our Unique Locations

We are proud to offer AAT in multiple settings across Regina to meet clients where they are most comfortable:

  • Joshua Tree Learning Centre – Enjoy one-on-one sessions in our office with our therapy dog, Harry, or soon-to-be-certified therapy dog, Roo. These sessions are tailored to your needs, providing a safe space for emotional growth and skill-building.
  • Beaver Creek Ranch and Horse Centre
  • Hidden Creek Ranch
  • Rough Bark Arena

At the ranch locations, clients can engage in equine-assisted therapy, combining the physical and emotional benefits of working with horses with expert therapeutic guidance. Being in nature, away from the city, enhances the experience, promoting calm, focus, and holistic well-being.

Group Therapy and Feline Connections

Animal-assisted therapy is also available in group formats. Our Feline Group, offered in partnership with the Regina Humane Society, allows participants to experience the comfort and social engagement that cats provide. Beyond therapy, participants also learn the skills required to become long-term volunteers with the Humane Society, adding a meaningful layer of purpose, responsibility, and mental health benefit to the experience.

Collaboration for Healing

Our programs are made possible through strong partnerships with local organizations, including the three ranches we work with and the Regina Humane Society. These collaborations ensure that our clients have access to safe, trained animals and skilled therapeutic guidance — all within a framework that prioritizes holistic, client-centered care.

Animal-assisted therapy is more than just spending time with animals — it’s a powerful, collaborative tool for growth, self-discovery, and healing. Whether you’re seeking one-on-one support with a therapy dog or a group experience with our feline friends or horses, we provide a safe, nurturing, and effective environment to support your journey.
