Summer Literacy Program – Literacy Booster Week

Understanding Word Parts: Improving Literacy through learning Prefixes, Roots, & Suffixes

Program runs: August 15 – 18 (M-Th) Start time 10:00-12:00 or 1:00p.m – 3:00p.m (minimal enrolment required)
Age Range: Grade 5-8 (2022-2023 school year)
Cost: $400.00

Did you know that over 60-75% of words that students in Grade 6 and up will encounter in school textbooks have recognizable word parts? Did you know that learning many of the Latin and Greek roots of words will help expand vocabulary and improve spelling and reading comprehension? Did you know that the four most common prefixes and suffixes account for 97% of the prefixed and suffixed words printed in school English?

This intensive, small group in-person program will focus on building students’ morphological awareness and help students learn commonly used roots and affixes. Knowing the meanings of the most common word parts gives you the building blocks for hundreds of words in the English language, improves understanding of vocabulary, increases reading fluency and improves reading comprehension and spelling. This morphological approach to vocabulary development will:

• Help students understand the concept of root words and affixes.
• Teach students many of the most common prefixes, root words and suffixes.
• Show students how new words are made from the combination of affixes and roots.
• Help students understand how to break words into syllables and decode more complex words and unfamiliar words.
• Help students devise spelling rules based on knowledge of affixes.

SUMMER INTENSIVE LITERACY PROGRAM (In-person)
