Pronouns: She/Her

Marilyn has 27 years of experience working as a counsellor or an educational psychologist in a post-secondary setting. She also has 21 years of experience as a counsellor working with an agency in Regina. She is registered with the Saskatchewan College of Psychologists. She is a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

Over time, through training and experience, Marilyn’s work has become rooted in the notion of client as expert in themselves and their lives, and in the belief that the Mind and Body have what is needed to create healing and transformation. The therapies used most often by Marilyn currently include:

Solution-Focused Therapy- This is a brief form of positive psychology that focuses on solution versus problem. It uses the client’s strengths, skills, resources and valuable experience to guide them toward selecting their own goals and manageable steps to get there.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy – This therapy helps the client to develop comfort with difficult thoughts and feelings recognizing that all thoughts and feelings are normal responses to life. This then helps the client to make better choices in the actions they take toward creating a life based on their own personal values.

Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy (and other Polyvagal Theory-based therapies) – Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy (developed by Dr. Peter Levine) and other therapy techniques connected to Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory recognize that trauma is rooted in an overwhelmed nervous system. Over time this can lead to emotional dysregulation and frequent triggering. These trauma therapies gradually work to help the client settle the nervous system, and teach the client how to recognize potential triggers and to learn to self-regulate creating more ease and vitality in their lives.

Marilyn also uses techniques learned from Inner Relationship Focusing (Ann Weiser Cornell & Barbara McGavin), and mindfulness-based and compassion-focused approaches.

Common areas that Marilyn will work with (but not limited to these) are:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Impact of Trauma
  • Grief & Loss (Loss includes losing anything important in life)
  • Managing Life Transitions
  • Stress Management/Developing Resilience
  • Creating Healthy Boundaries
  • Assertiveness Work
  • Building Self-Confidence
