REGISTERED SOCIAL WORKER, ADDICTION COUNSELLOR, MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLOR
Alannah is an experienced clinician having worked with individuals and their families in various roles for 19 years including Addiction Counsellor, Mental Health Counsellor, Community School Recreation Coordinator, and Youth Facility Worker.
Alannah studied at the University of Regina, completing a Bachelor of Physical Activity Studies in 2000 and a Bachelor of Social Work in 2009. In 2015, Alannah went on to earn her Life Coach Certification through the Certified Coaches Federation.
Dedicating much of her career to helping youth, Alannah is a strong believer in “prevention, not reaction.” She’s worked with youth addictions issues in Regina public schools and the secure youth detox. In addition, she was the first recreation coordinator in a community school in Leask, Saskatchewan and spent six years as a facility worker at the Paul Dojack Youth Centre.
For the past two and a half years, Alannah has been working with youth mental health issues. Her goal is: “to build relationships of trust and connection while providing skills, insight and awareness; to help youth before their challenges become overwhelming and develop into severe addictions and/or mental illness.”
Although working with youth holds a special interest for Alannah, she has played a supporting role in every stage of life from working at a daycare to extending quality of life to residents of a nursing home. In addition, Alannah has worked as a Life Skills facilitator at Street Workers Advocacy Project. In her Addiction Counsellor role, she worked in brief, social detox, and adult therapies; providing counselling, assessment and referral to treatment centres as appropriate.
Alannah says: “each role has been different, yet the same. People need someone to hear them, someone to connect with them. I want to be that someone.” Along her journey, Alannah has had her own challenges to overcome, having dealt with both addictions and mental illness. She approached her healing holistically utilizing spirituality, energy healing practices, transformation retreats, and nutrition education through a health coach.
Alannah maintains a positive, supportive relationship with the individuals she helps through their tough times. She has a gentle, collaborative, creative and integrative approach to counselling. Alannah utilizes cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, solution focused therapy, motivational interviewing, cultural informed practices and trauma informed practices to help clients reach their full potential. Alannah is excited to offer services to individuals and their families for addictions and other issues at Joshua Tree Learning Centre. Come meet Alannah and let her light up your life and help start your transformation!
